Volunteer Driver Development Project
The Project
The Volunteer Driver Project was conceived out of the realisation that community transport schemes could not survive and operate without a constant and increased flow of new volunteer drivers.
Furthermore, the schemes were cautious about advertising the fact that they existed, because an upsurge in demand could not be met due to a shortage of volunteers. This meant that many people, isolated by circumstances beyond their control, could not be helped. This aspect goes against the grain of voluntary and community sector thinking, because it meant that services could not be offered to all equally.
A third consideration was the differing standard of service offered, plus an unawareness of, and/or inability to implement, best practice due to lack of time and the costs involved.
Over two years, the project achieved a 69% increase in volunteer drivers (56% nett), a 28% increase in client trips, greater capacity for service delivery and improvement in best practice protocols.
Based on the value of the recruited volunteers time there was a direct financial benefit of £1,205,568 plus other indirect benefits.
